Tributes to George H. W. Bush filled the National Cathedral today. I will remember him as an honorable man who placed country above party. I enjoyed the stories about his sense of humor, and compassion, and steady hand, whether he was steering global affairs or a speedboat. I cried for his family’s loss, and because I know how it feels to lose beloved parents, and for our country’s current dysfunction.
President Bush provided a role model for our highest office. Reading about his life of public service created such a contrast with our current chief executive that I strive to avoid despair. I worry about the state of our democracy and whether it can survive the current upheaval. Then I remind myself that this nation has survived many upheavals. And I trust that we’ll make it through this one too.
